Housing
New Orleans needs 48,000 more affordable housing units, according to housing experts. The city needs more units constructed and affordable units preserved. Currently, housing is rapidly being converted into short term rentals that keeps units off the market for residents. Jackson supports multiple solutions to help solve our housing crisis.
Short Term Rentals
Our city has over 3,000 illegal short term rentals (STRs). Jackson supports only owner occupied STRs with an active homestead exemption. Owners with multiple units and ones located in commercial areas take away housing that should be occupied by residents. Once elected, Jackson plans to hold the city accountable to drastically reduce the number of illegal rentals.
Building Affordable Housing
Jackson wants to double the city’s housing trust fund and develop more unused city and school board property. He will leverage his experience in the construction industry to get more projects built. Affordable housing helps people in need and get our unhoused population off the streets.
Maintaining Affordable Housing
Jackson will hold HANO and other housing nonprofits accountable to maintain existing affordable housing stock. Maintenance issues routinely reduce the number of available units throughout the city. He supports the healthy homes program to ensure quality living conditions for all his neighbors.
Accessory Dwelling Units
These units also known as grandma flats, casitas, and backyard cottages provide an affordable way to build additional housing. Jackson supports allowing them to be constructed city-wide. It allows homeowners to gain extra income and provide more housing in an affordable package.
